1. Product properties
(1)Physical properties
the appearance is generally white and gray; density is 2.56-2.66; Mohs Scale is 5.5-6.0; melting point is about 1100.
Referring to the test results provided by the Guangdong Technical Supervision Station for Ceramics Quality Supervision & Inspection, internal exposure index IRa=0.16 and external exposure index Ir£½0.52.
(2) Chemical properties
Molecular formula: Na3K(AlSiO4)4;
chemical composition: SiO2;54±1, Al2O;26±1, Na2O;11±0.5, K2O;6.0±0.5, Fe2O3;0.08,TiO2;0.02.
(3) High temperature capacity
Nepheline syenite is a kind of silicate rock containing potassium and sodium fluxing agents. It is sintered at 1060; and molten at 1150-1200. Due to its rich content of potassium, sodium and aluminum, nepheline syenite can completely replace feldspar and bring good results.
2. Description on application
(1)For body
Nepheline syenite is a kind of more effective fluxing agent comparing with feldspar (or weathered feldspar). Therefore, when it is used in body, the temperature required for firing is lower, and more silicon dioxide is produced to form quartz glass. Moreover, the viscosity of ceramic product is higher. The firing range is wider. And the finished product does not tend to be broken and distorted. Owing to high content of alumina, nepheline syenite creates mullite crystalline phase at high temperature and therefore greatly improve the mechanical strength of the product to effectively protect the product from wind crack during quenching and to avoid breakage resulted from mechanical force in follow-up process and transportation.
On manufacturing new-type ultra-white polished tiles, a given amount of nepheline syenite may be added to replace partial addition of zirconium silicate and to achieve the fast firing process of a big quantity of polished tiles at low temperature. In that case, the radionuclide is properly under control. Also, it is a breakthrough in the export business of ultra-white tiles, which is strictly limited by radionuclide.
(2)For glaze
Adding proper amount of nepheline syenite into bright glaze will effectively improve the glossiness, smoothness and whiteness of glaze surface. Due to its high content of alumina, the hardness and crack resistance of glaze surface can be much improved.
Adding right amount of nepheline syenite into mat glaze at mid and low temperature will widen the firing range, greatly improve the mat texture of the glaze surface and make the glaze surface become soft and delicate.
Adding right amount of nepheline syenite into frit at low temperature will significantly lower the firing temperature, equalize the melting of the frit and cut down the cost for raw material and firing process.
According to some experts, the ceramic manufacturers shall try to use other substitutes for radioactive zirconium material. The nepheline syenite is just the solution.
